Karen was born in London and educated in Edinburgh/Perthshire, with further education in Edinburgh. She was a tutor for 23 years in Dugdale McAdam Secretarial College in Edinburgh, thereafter a computer and Microsoft trainer for various companies including Scottish & Newcastle. Latterly, Karen was PA to the MD of Scottish Brewers. She now works for Marks and Spencer.
Sandra, Karen's 52 year old sister, is settled and happy in the care of SHARE Scotland in one of their Edinburgh residences. Sandra was born severely physically and mentally disabled. Their father is also still very actively involved with her wellbeing.
Karen has a 23 year old son James, from a previous marriage, and currently lives with her partner, Alec, and son in Livingston.
