Sara has been supported by SHARE Scotland since 2002, she lives in a 4 bedroom house with 2 other housemates.
After returning from college in Lancaster, Sara was unsure of what to do with her spare time in her new home. She tried some activities, like working in a café, massages and beauty treatments, and a few college courses, but nothing seemed to really stretch her and push her to develop her skills in any specific direction. Sara had always enjoyed music and so when we saw an advert for Indepen-dance it caught our attention. Indepen-dance is a dance group which works with adults with learning disabilities and believes that everyone should have the chance to participate in the theatre and the arts. So we thought, why not give it a whirl!
Sara loved going to the class where she was able to explore movement and music together. Sara experiences cerebral ataxia which means that she has tremors, and these could sometimes get the better of her in a world that seemed to value more the fit, healthy and ‘normal’. Here, the tremors didn’t matter. Her body and ability to move in her own way was a positive, she could explore her body movements and it became a powerful way to express herself.
Sara was soon invited to try out for the choreographed class which was involved in performance dance. These classes were not for fooling about or making mistakes, the teachers meant business! Sara has gone from strength to strength, she absolutely thrives on the energy of her dance group. She has performed at various locations in and around Glasgow, including the Clyde Auditorium, and in 2008 performed at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London. This involved several days of hard work and rehearsals followed by two performances in a packed out theatre. What a buzz!
So Sara has truly found her niche in the arts, few could say they have come on such a wonderful journey.
