The starting point when offering the support a person might require must be their own wishes, hopes and aspirations as well as their needs.  In understanding how an individual wants to be supported to lead their life, should they be unable to tell others directly, it helps to recognize those things that, when present or absent for ourselves, serve to enrich or impoverish our own life; love; companionship; choice; privacy; a feeling that we are individuals, each with something to contribute.

The support that a person receives should be as non-interventional as possible; provided in a manner that is not disempowering.   Practice should promote inclusion yet independence, and not lead to segregated dependency.

SHARE follows these five simple ground rules:

sharing places

We support a person's actual physical presence in the same community, recreational and health facilities and places of worship as everyone else.

making choices

We support a person in making choices about their life by encouraging them to understand the options open to them, and to act in their interest both in small everyday matters as well as important issues like where they want to live.

personal development

We support a person to develop skills and abilities that significantly decrease their dependency on others.

dignity

We enhance the respect afforded to a person by ensuring that their choice of activities, locations, form of dress, use of language and emphasis on individuality promote the perception of people with disabilities as positive citizens.

growing in relationships

We support a person's natural relationships with their families, friends and neighbours, and at every opportunity widen each individual's network of personal relationships.

future aims and objectives

SHARE Scotland is committed to providing a service that develops alongside the individuals it supports.  It not only strives to meet their current needs, but also offers people an environment in which they can experience new opportunities, meet new people and face new challenges.

As well as continuing to develop and improve the services currently being provided, SHARE plans to expand its network of services.  The future will present new challenges and opportunities for SHARE Scotland's teams and the people we work alongside.  Throughout Scotland there remains a need for flexible and responsive services for people with complex disabilities.  SHARE is rightly proud of its track record and believes that it can continue to provide a high-quality, individualized package of care to many others who want to participate fully in their own community with whatever support they require.
